The results of chronic stress are frightening. Although it is not realistic to think we can live a stress free life, your goal should be to avoid getting stuck in a stage of chronic stress.
What reduces stress is as individual as each of us. However, there are some key elements to help us overcome the stress we are experiencing:
- identify the problem
- look for a solution to the problem (once identified)
- talk about your problems
- learn stress management techniques
- take your mind off your problems
- reduce tension
Once your stress level has been lowered it is wise to try to prevent excessive stress from building up again.
The most common types of stressors can be prevented if you:
- make decisions; avoiding them causes worry and therefore stress.
- avoid putting things off, so things do not catch up and overwhelm you
- share the load, get others to help with tasks they can handle so you don't try to do everything yourself
